Solid debut for Ricky

Coach happy with Alvarez showing

Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Tottenham Hotspur was the perfect Barclays Premier League introduction for Ricky Alvarez, according to Gus Poyet. The head coach started the on-loan Inter Milan forward and he enjoyed a solid debut, as the Black Cats twice came from behind to seal a point at the Stadium of Light. Speaking to Poyet admitted Alvarez will take time to adapt, but he was more than pleased with what he saw from the Argentine on his Black Cats bow.  “The first thing I said to Ricky was ‘welcome to the Barclays Premier League’, because this is what it is like week in week out’. “The pace, the intensity, the tackling and the up and downs mean it is non-stop and people don’t realise that from the outside, they think football is 11 against 11 on a pitch but it is a totally different game.” He added: “It depends on our team, how we play and how he adapts to us, we also need to adapt to him but he needs to get used to the Barclays Premier League. “I am sure he is going to enjoy his time here with us and Saturday will bring plenty of positives.” Next up for the Wearsiders is s trip to Turf Moor to take on Burnley, and Poyet is fully-focussed on picking up three points. “People will say that we have not won yet but I can say that we have only lost one game in five, so it depends how you can put it in people’s minds. “What I can tell you is that the Tottenham game was very difficult so we need to be pleased with a point.” He continued: “We are looking for our first victory and we have a great opportunity against Burnley, not because of them but because of us and the way we are playing. “We need to make sure we know how difficult it is going to be there, training well and picking the right team to get the three points.”
