PSG-Salzburg : 3-1

Paris Saint-Germain defeated Red Bull Salzburg 3-1 with goals from Nenê (pen. 35'), Mathieu Bodmer (44') and Jérémy Ménez (67') in a perfect start to the Europa League group phase...

After a 2010-11 Europa League campaign rich in success and emotion, PSG began their second successive group phase in the competition. First up was the visit of Austrian outfit Red Bull Salzburg to the Parc des Princes that the capital club were hoping would provide a successful start to the a Group H that also includes Athletic Bilbao and Slovan Bratislava.

The two sides exchanged blows in the opening exchanges. Leitgeb (2'), Leonardo (3'), Maierhofer (12', 22') forced Nicolas Douchez to be alert in the PSG goal. The home side responded in kind va Nenê (8'), Ménez (8') and Mevlut Erding (18', 23') but without any better fortune. In the end, the match turned on its head late in the opening period.

After a breath-taking acceleration, Ménez left the Red Bull defence standing and Schiemmer's attempted intervention only resulted in a penalty for the hosts. Nenê took charge and opened the scoring (1-0, 35'). But Les Parisiens didn't stop there...

Just a few seconds before the half-time whistle, Erding inherited possession on the left and crossed towards Bodmer - a ball that the midfielder dispatched like a rocket into the top corner (2-0, 44'). And while the first half was an even affair, Antoine Kombouaré's men headed to the interval with a distinct advantage...

After the pause, chances for Les Rouge et Bleu continued to flow: Nenê (51'), Bodmer (59'), Erding 63'), Javier Pastore (65') and Kevin Gameiro (67') all failed to add to the advantage. In the end, it was Ménez that took charge of that! The France international intercepted the ball and charged towards goal, giving Gustafsson, no chance (3-0, 67').

From a free-kick, Sekagya did manage to get the Austrians on the scoreboard in the final minutes (3-1, 87'), but the result was never beyond doubt. The 3-1 victory was a sixth consecutive win in all competitions for PSG who travel to the Parc des Sports d’Annecy and a Ligue 1 showdown with promoted Evian this Sunday... Vincent Guérin
