Argentina Books Copa America Quarterfinal Berth; Chile Tops Bolivia

Argentina got three goals from superstar striker Lionel Messi in a quarterfinal-clinching 5-0 rout of Panama in Centennial Copa America Group D action, while Chile topped Bolivia 2-1.

Argentina scored in the seventh minute of Friday’s night’s game at Soldier Field on a header off a free kick by defender Nicolas Otamendi but then struggled against a feisty Panamanian side, which hung in the game despite playing a man down following Anibal Godoy’s expulsion for two yellow cards.

Messi, however, took over the game when he came on at the one-hour mark, scoring in a one-on-one opportunity against net minder Jaime Penedo in the 68th minute, on a stunning free kick ten minutes later and on a play in which he maneuvered around three defenders in the 87th minute. Sergio “Kun” Aguero scored the fifth goal on a header just before the final whistle.

In Friday night’s other game, Chile – which hosted and won the 2015 Copa America – topped Bolivia 2-1 on a penalty by Arturo Vidal in the 10th minute of stoppage time at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts. Bolivia was eliminated from this hemispheric competition with the loss, while Chile and Panama both have three points in Group D and will square off on Tuesday night in Philadelphia for a berth in the quarterfinals.
